Though coffee and alcohol are widely considered unhealthy, turns out, they could contribute to a longer life if taken in the right amount.
In a study by the University of California, Irvine, scientists reevaluated the things which are generally considered harmful for health.
One thing the team proved wrong was the perception that wine, beer, and coffee reduces human life.
“People who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained,” the study authors concluded.
If you’re a latte enthusiast or a liquor lover, it’s sure a moment of rejoicing for you.
But, as you would’ve expected, there’s a small catch.
The researchers paid a special focus on the word “moderate” to emphasize that binging on caffeinated or alcoholic beverages is undoubtedly a health hazard.
To put it simply, keep drinking alcohol and coffee, just don’t bother emptying all the cans. Keep a restriction on yourself and consume these beverages in a “moderate” amount.
If you don’t believe the study findings, you won’t doubt them once you realize how massive the study was.
The extensive study tracked more than 1,600 people since 2003.
Researchers used to visit the study participants every six months so as to make regular assessments of their neurological health.
They also obtained the dietary information and medical history of the participants.
Over this vast period of time, people who drank coffee and alcohol in moderate amounts managed to stay alive till 90 years and beyond.
The robust study also evaluated other factors that helped people to reach the age of 90 and beyond.
The University of California, Irvine research is important because there are very few studies which target people belonging to the 90+ age group, which is one of the fastest growing age groups in the US.
Researchers also noted that science will be able to find the key to a longer life when more studies are conducted on older people.
