A New York Black Lives Matter leader appeared to have defended looters and protesters as he took an aim at the US government and compared it to terrorists.
Hawk Newsome is the chairman of BLM Greater New York who discussed the current situation with Martha MacCallum, a Fox News host, as he appeared on The Story with Martha MacCallum.
During the interview, Newsome responded to Rudy Giuliani’s calls for Black Lives Matter to be branded a “domestic terrorist organization.”
On Monday, a day before the conversation between MacCallum and Newsome took place, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, insisted that BLM is an “illegal organization” whereas activists whose purpose is “to overthrow our government” have “basically engaged in stealing.”
Responding to the attorney and politician during The Story was Newsome who slammed the former mayor over his accusations.
“He’s talking about mothers and fathers who are out there protesting. He’s talking about black people and white people who are out there fighting for the rights of every human being – for equity, for human rights – and he’s calling us terrorists?” Newsome said.
After the TV host told the BLM leader that Giuliani was most likely referring to rioters and looters who have engaged in pillaging and the destruction of property, Newsome suggested the US government is doing much worse.
“OK, so when America goes and steals diamonds and oils, who’s calling us terrorists?” he said. “When the American government goes and pillages different countries, who’s calling us terrorists?”
After Newsome was asked if he supports the words of Ariel Atkins, a fellow Black Lives Matter leader who suggested looting is a part of reparations, he avoided the question and claimed that “criticizing the oppressed” is a sign of white supremacy.
“The problem with oppression and white supremacy is, white supremacy will have you criticizing the oppressed and worshiping the oppressors,” Newsome said.
“Now, if you want to talk to me about reparations, nothing falls short of a solution other than people cutting a check. If you want to do something about reparations, cut the check.”
After the host once again asked Newsome if he supported the looting of businesses, the BLM leader continued to talk about the need for reparations made to the black community.
“In fairness, I listened to you and now I want you to answer my question. Do you agree that it’s okay to go in and break the windows at Gucci or Macy’s or Nike because it makes sure that that person eats and that person has clothes – that was my question to you,” MacCallum once again pointed out.
Responding to the question, Newsome said:
“OK. Before I answer that, I want to ask you this: Do you think it’s okay that our government kills people in their homes like Breonna Taylor?”
After the TV host said it’s not okay for that to happen and reminded Newsome of her question, the BLM leader continued talking about the killing of Taylor, prompting MacCallum to wrap up the interview.
“You’re having a circular conversation. You don’t wanna answer questions about looting and stealing,” the TV host concluded.
