Fired Navy captain Brett Crozier was diagnosed with COVID-19 shortly after being relieved of command for raising coronavirus alarm in a leaked letter according to The New York Times report.
As the newspaper reported, the former captain’s Naval Academy classmates have confirmed that Crozier tested positive for COVID-19.
In addition, the two colleagues have claimed that Crozier began experiencing the novel coronavirus symptoms prior to his dismissal by the navy secretary.
According to the Times, a Navy spokesperson confirmed that the former captain has been reassigned to the Naval Air Forces Pacific headquarters following the incident.
As reported, Crozier will resume his duties after undergoing the quarantine.
Captain Brett Crozier was relieved of command after sending a “non-secure unclassified email,” which was later leaked to the media, to several recipients to warn about the situation on the vessel and request immediate action.
Following the coronavirus outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the ship had been stationed at a Guam port whereas nearly one hundred sailors tested positive for COVID-19 as of last Wednesday.
After the leaked letter went viral, Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly condemned the captain’s actions and accused him of “extremely poor judgment” which led to the captain getting dismissed from his position.
While the captain may have been relieved of command following the incident, a large crowd of sailors was seen paying him respects by cheering and clapping in an emotional send-off.
