A 60-year-old man with huge growths on his nose that made it difficult for him to breathe finally had them removed on the reality TV show Dr Pimple Popper.
Roger from San Antonio Texas said the growths started as a small pimple around 11 years ago. But the lumps have since grown to large rhinophymas that cover most of his face, leaving him unable to work.
“I have this big old growth on my nose. They have little holes. That’s where all the puss comes out,” he said.
Roger said flies are attracted to his growths because of the puss coming out.
“I can’t breathe through my nose because of the heaviness. I have to move my nose because I can’t eat right. I haven’t worked for a while because everybody gets scared of me,” he said.
“Everybody laughs at me.”
During the episode, Roger told Dr. Sandra Lee that she was his last hope as hospitals did not want to help him because he had no insurance.
Fortunately, Dr. Jason Hamilton and Dr. Ryan Osbourne also agreed to operate for free.
“When I initially saw Roger’s nose, I thought Holy Cow!” Dr. Lee shared. “I couldn’t believe he has this level of rhinophyma.
“It’s the most extreme case I’ve ever seen. His situation is fairly critical.”
Dr. Lee brought in dermatologist Richard Bennett to operate on Roger’s nose but they both decided that the risk was extremely because of possible blood loss.
“Its an extremely risky procedure,” Dr. Lee said. “Blood loss is a major concern and could lead to cardiac arrest. It’s best tog get Roger gets under general anaesthesia with lots of blood around.”
Dr. Osbourne explained the procedure and said: “You’ve got to be careful and not remove the normal parts of the nose.
“If I were to remove too much of this tissue, we could go from one deformity into another deformity.”
Speaking after the surgery, Roger said that his whole life had changed.
“It took a long time to heal but now my nose looks great,” he expressed. “Old ladies are talking to me.”
