Disney has finally broken the silence about Johnny Depp’s potential return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The 59-year-old Hollywood legend, who portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in the beloved pirate movies, was long rumored to be returning for the sixth installment after winning his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp previously claimed that he lost $22 million in earnings after his ex-wife notoriously defamed him in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she accused him of domestic abuse.
After her piece had circulated the world, Depp was sacked from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with Disney executives claiming they were looking to bring “new energy” in the sixth film.
After Depp won his defamation case against Heard, however, the tables have shifted and rumors suggesting the actor was once again in talks with Disney went viral.
The rumors of a $300 million deal that would see the return of one-and-only Captain Jack Sparrow were since refuted.
Nevertheless, Disney has now finally weighed in on the potential return of Depp in the sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
In an interview with The New York Times, Disney Studios Motion Picture Production president Sean Bailey opened up about the upcoming movie and said:
“We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say.”
Neither confirming nor dismissing Depp’s return, the production president said everything was “noncommittal at this point.”
