Britney Spears and Prince William were once very close to becoming an item.
Though many people don’t know this story, the future King of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms once had his eyes set on the pop singer who was at the time in the prime of her singing career.
The American hitmaker and the top member of the British royalty, who are now both 40, reportedly had a brief “cyber romance” back in their teen years and were close to becoming a couple.
The romance, however, eventually came to an end when William cut things off with Britney.
“We exchanged e-mails for a little bit and he was supposed to come and see me somewhere but it didn’t work out,” the Baby One More Time singer admitted when she was just 20.
When asked by talk show host Frank Skinner if she was “blown out by Prince William,” the singer responded by saying: “Yeah.”
At the time of her interview, Britney was 20 years old and in the prime of her career as a singer and was dating Justin Timberlake.
The Toxic hitmaker also admitted she had no clue why the prince, who is now an heir to the throne, changed his mind about pursuing a relationship with her.
Britney’s interview came in 2002 after months of speculations during which the Palace denied rumors that Prince William and the singer were dating.
The pair’s brief “cyber romance” was most recently also presented in the book Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan by royal biographer Christopher Andersen.
“[William and Britney] tried to get together back when they were young,” Andersen wrote.
“There may have been phone conversations, but I don’t recall that they ever actually managed to get together during that period.”
