One of the police officers involved in the death of 23-year-old Elijah McClain was fired after receiving photos of three cops laughing and reenacting the incident outside the memorial of the victim.
Officer Jason Rosenblatt has been fired, the Aurora Police Department announced, along with officers Kyle Dittrich and Erica Marrero for their involvement.
Another officer, Jaron Jones, resigned just before the pre-disciplinary hearing.
Rosenblatt, who was involved in the 23-year-old’s arrest, took part in the photos but was fired after he received them and he replied in the message: “HaHa.”
The photos released by Aurora Interim Chief Vanessa Wilson shows Jones putting Dittrich in a deadly chokehold while Marrero laughs in the background. All three cops were in uniform and on duty.
The photos were taken two months after 23-year-old McClain, an animal lover and a massage therapist, passed away after officers held him in a chokehold.
Chief Wilson said in a press conference: “We’re ashamed, we’re sickened and we’re angry. While the allegations of this internal affairs case are not criminal, it is a crime against humanity and decency.”
She added: “It shows a lack of morals, values and integrity, and judgment. I can no longer trust to allow them to wear this badge.”
Chief Wilson also said the photos were shown to the victim’s family before they were shared with the public.
The family’s lawyer, Mari Newman, said: “The fact that three on-duty, in-uniform police officers thought that it was appropriate to reenact the murder, jokingly, shows that the department is rotten to the core.”
Newman added: “For her, (Elijah’s mother, Sheneen McClain) it was just devastating to see that people were mocking the murder of her son.”
