Chloe Grace Moretz, 25, has admitted that a viral photo mocking her appearance has ‘really affected’ her and made her turn away from the spotlight.
Speaking to Hunger magazine, the actress said that the meme where her photo was edited to make her look like a Family Guy character made her suffer from body dysmorphia.
She told the publication: “I just remember sitting there and thinking, “My body is being used as a joke and it’s something that I can’t change about who I am, and it is being posted all over Instagram.”
In the viral meme, an altered photo of Chloe carrying pizza boxes into a hotel was placed next to a Family Guy character.
“This photo got manipulated into a character from Family Guy with the long legs and the short torso, and it was one of the most widespread memes at the time,” she said.
But the real photo shows Chloe looking chich in black t-shirt and black shorts that showed off her figure.
“’Everyone was making fun of my body and I brought it up with someone and they were like, ‘Oh, shut the f**k up, it’s funny.’”
Because of the meme, the ‘Greta’ and ‘The 5th Wave’ star said she became a ‘recluse.’
“To this day, when I see that meme, it’s something very hard for me to overcome,” she expressed.
The actress also said the experience “took a layer of something” she used to enjoy, which included taking photos and getting dressed up.
“I think that body dysmorphia — which we all deal with in this world — is extrapolated by the issues of social media. It’s a headf**k,” she added.
