The comedian faced backlash after he hosted the show on January 7. He did not hold back about his opening monologue as he joked about the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer’s running time.

He also made fun of Swift’s way of supporting her NFL player boyfriend, Travis Kelce, whom she started dating last year.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift… there’s just more to go to here,” Jo Koy joked.

The camera panned to the singer and showed her unimpressed reaction to the comment.

Swifties were quick to defend the You Belong With Me hitmaker, with one fan saying: “That death glare Taylor Swift gave Jo Koy after his little camera angle comment… GIRL, that man better say some prayers or something because if looks could bring misfortune, it’s that one.”

Another wrote: “Omg, Taylor Swift’s death stare before sipping champagne at the #GoldenGlobes perfectly embodies Jo Koy’s cringey hosting job.”

After the show, Jo Koy spoke with Entertianment Tonight and clarified: “Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute. I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”

When the interviewer asked if Swift was just ‘thirsty’ and was about to drink her champagne when the camera panned to her, Koy said: “Aww, man.”

In an interview with the LA Times, he explained that the joke was supposed to take a shot at the NFL and not the singer.

He said that he did not understand the ‘Taylor Swift tiff.’

“But the whole intention of that joke was to make fun of the NFL. It’s like, the cool thing about the [Golden] Globes is we don’t need to do cutaways for ratings,” he went on before adding that he was ‘just supporting Taylor.’

“I support her, I love her work. I got nieces that I bought tickets for. There’s no ill intent in that joke,” Jo Koy said.

“I’m not saying anything that no one’s saying, and it’s obvious what that joke was. It’s about the NFL. It’s like out of everything that has happened this is the one you choose to go after. I didn’t understand why because it was fun when I walked out.”
