The producers of the Netflix series Dead To Me made some changes in the final season to help with Christina Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis.
The actress, who plays the role of widow Jen Harding, was diagnosed with MS halfway through the production of the hit series’ third season.
MS affects the spinal cord and the brain, causing numerous symptoms including difficulty walking, vision problems, numbness, and muscle spasms.
After Applegate’s diagnosis in 2021, the production decided to take a five-month hiatus. The series’ bosses also offered the actress the choice to stop filming but the star wanted to go on and wrap up the show.
Speaking to the New York Times, she described her return to the set as ‘the hardest thing I’ve ever done.’
The Anchorman actress also revealed how she relied on a wheelchair to get around between scenes.
In the show, Jen can now be seen delivering her lines from a chair or leaning on something for support.
Series creator Liz Feldman told The Hollywood Reporter: “We didn’t change anything in the story, really anything in the script.
“Maybe there are scenes where she sits more or leans on a door or something like that but really pretty minimal.
“To me, Christina is who she’s always been from day one, which is a strong, hilarious, brilliantly talented, tenacious, incredibly supportive and protective den mother. Nothing changed in terms of her role on the show.”
Feldman also said that Applegate is the “best no.1 you could ever ask for,” adding that the actress wanted to give the hit series a closure “and so we did it on her terms and I’m extremely proud of how it turned out.”
