The World Gymnastics Championship in Germany witnessed yet another historic moment this Sunday when one of the best gymnasts globally- Simone Biles had one more floor move named after her.
The competition was held in Stuttgart, Germany where Biles represented a triple-double on the floor. For this, she took to triple-twisting double backflip.
Looking at the innovation that Biles brought into the sport with her move, the move is going to be named ‘Biles II’.
Biles II because the name ‘Biles’ will be given to her move on the balancing beam where she did a double-double tuck- two flips and two twists.
However, all was not obstacle-free for Biles because the gymnastics officials were of the opinion that the move was too difficult for fellow gymnasts to attempt. Therefore, they watered down the points awarded to her as they were concerned for other gymnasts.
As a consequence of losing out on points, Biles slammed the officials by telling NBC that she is proudly in competition with herself to get better every day. If the authorities cannot digest that and give her the due credit, then it is not fair according to her.
She said and we quote, “Am I in a league of my own? Yes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t credit me for what I’m doing.”
She added that it is the rule of the championship that the gymnasts who do the most challenging stunts will get better points. Therefore, there is no reason why she should stop herself from attempting better stunts and earn fair points for the same.
For justifying their action after a lot of criticism, the International Gymnastics Federation’s Women’s Technical Committee said that it is the safety of the gymnasts, the risk, and the technical direction which made her lose the points.
Well, whatever the decision of the committee might be, the crux is that Biles is a decorated athlete who will keep on going the extra mile to accomplish more in her career.
