Teachers are allegedly being forced to undergo “white privilege” training in order to become anti-racism activists who commit themselves to teaching others to see their privilege.
As journalist Christopher F. Rufo insisted in his article, San Diego Unified School District has released a mandatory “white privilege” training that all of their teachers have to attend.
According to Rufo, the leaders of the training confront the teachers about the “stolen land” they live and work on as they ask them to acknowledge that they are colonizers.
“We acknowledge that we meet on stolen land, taken from Indigenous peoples. I am speaking to you from Kumeyaay land. We must acknowledge the hidden history of violence against Indigenous peoples in an effort to move towards justice,” one of the controversial slides presented during the training reads.
Teachers are reportedly also told that they are racist and that they are “upholding racist ideas, structures, and policies” as trainers inform them that feeling “guilt, anger, apathy, frustration, closed-mindedness, defensiveness” upon hearing such comments is a sign of “white fragility.”
Throughout the mandatory training, teachers are reportedly also shown figures showing that the majority of people working for the US government, military, and educational institutions are white.
The presentation also suggests that white people get to decide “which books we read, which TV show we see, which news is covered, and which music is produced.”
As the training comes to an end, teachers are also advised on how to commit themselves to become anti-racist activists in a series of tips.
Some of the suggestions include: “Confront and examine your white privilege,” “Acknowledge when you feel white fragility happening for you and slow down so you can listen, learn, and act,” and “teach others to see their privilege”
