With lockdown still in place, plenty of Americans are doing their best to stay safe and protect themselves from the novel coronavirus.
As one North Carolina mother who has no face masks at home revealed, she had to come up with a creative solution after her husband wouldn’t let her go shopping without any protective gear.
To ease her husband’s mind and comply with the government advice that suggests people cover their faces while in public, Kelly Hogan Painter donned a Buzz Lightyear helmet as she went out to buy essentials.
The decision to dress up as the Toy Story character followed after the mum-of-three realized they had nothing to eat for breakfast but oatmeal.
“I realized one morning that we were eating oatmeal, and none of us like oatmeal. So I knew I needed to go to the grocery store,” Kelly told Insider.
Speaking of her decision to wear the funny headwear, she added:
“Honestly, it was put a plastic bag over my head or wear the helmet. We don’t have masks in our house. Who keeps masks in their house?”
As she reached a nearby store in her Buzz Lightyear helmet, the mother quickly realized fellow shoppers were amused by her unusual outfit.
“They might be laughing at me, or they might be laughing with me. I really don’t care either way, as long as they’re laughing,” Kelly said in an interview with Insider.
While the helmet may look funny on her, the mum admitted she no longer goes shopping without it and has worn it over 15 times since the idea was born.
