There are beautiful creatures out there that, while exotic, are very much real.
It’s just that not many people know about them. And one of them is the zorse. Technically, it would be more correct to call them zebroids which refers to any zebra hybrid.
There are several types of zebroids. For instance, the product of a donkey sire and zebra dam is called a zebra hinny (or donkra) while the offspring of a male horse and female donkey is called an hebra. While the names sound funny, that’s what these hybrids are really called.
One photographer named Carina Maiwald had the good fortune to come across a zorse outside of Africa. As the name implies, a zorse is the product of a zebra stallion and a horse mare. The particular zorse she ran into is named Zuri who is one-and-a-half years old.
In Africa, zorses are bred for trekking in Mount Kenya and they are valued because the zebra parentage makes them resistant to nagana pest disease. Zebroids are rarely found outside of Africa and are usually bred as curiosities which makes Carina’s encounter with Zuri all the more special.
Carina somehow managed and captured some stunning photographs of Zuri which you can see below. She describes Zuri as sweet but with a hint of the wild in her eyes and she tried to capture that essence in the photos she took of this wonderful animal.
Take a look at them and judge for yourself if Carina managed to hit her mark.
