An Italian man, aged 101, who was born during the 1919 pandemic that killed an estimated 50 million people has recovered from COVID-19.
He hails from a small town in north-east Italy Rimini. It was a time when the world was struggling with the Spanish Flu pandemic that killed millions of people.
The good news is that the man has been dischargeed from the hospital. He is one of the oldest patients in the world to recover from the deadly virus infection.
Gloria Lisi, Rimini’s Deputy Mayor, said that earlier this week, the old man was released from the hospital and returned to his family.
What’s fascinating about his recovery is that the virus is particularly dangerous for old people since it is affecting the most with health problems and a weak immune system.
As per Italy’s National Institute of Health, about 86% of deaths caused in the country due to the virus are patients older than 70.
Italy is among the top three countries that have been affected badly with the virus. According to the reports, there are over 80,000 cases been filed, out of which 9134 people have died. It is really shocking to see the virus spread like that.
The whole world is taking lockdown measures to prevent any more cases. Still, people are going out in public. People really need to take preventative measures in order to ensure that they remain safe.
Back in 1919, during the Spanish Flu pandemic, it attacked one-third of the world’s population in just three months and the death toll due to that was three times that of people died in the First World War.
The 1919 pandemic disproportionately attacked the juvenile as well as weakened patients, but it predominantly killed young adults. That’s quite the opposite of what coronavirus is doing, which is mostly affecting the older adults.
