Imagine being on the bus after a hard day at work when someone suddenly pulls out their smartphone to watch a video without putting headphones on.
Or perhaps you have that colleague who just loves heating stinky fish in the office microwave. It’s obvious they didn’t get the memo and make life a big inconvenience for everyone around them.
In fact, sometimes it gets to the point when you just want to spell out rules for common courtesy, even to strangers. In fact, a Reddit user asked the question, “What is one ’unwritten rule’ you think everyone should know and follow?” And the replies were staggering.
Check out some of the more popular replies on the thread. Are you guilty of any one of them?
– When someone shows you a photo on their phone, don’t swipe left or right.
– Don’t propose to your girlfriend at someone else’s wedding.
– If you’re borrowing something more than twice, you need to get your own.
– If you cancel on a friend, you should be the one to reschedule.
– The office cafeteria is off limits for heating fish.
– Don’t make a habit of pointing out the flaws in someone’s physical appearance.
– If your friend drinks, don’t let them drive. Get them an Uber and do it for other people, too.
– When talking to a woman you barely know, don’t comment, “When are you due?” She might not even be pregnant.
– Don’t abandon your shopping cart in the middle of the store aisle.
– If you’re going to listen to your phone for something other than a phone call, wait until you get home or invest in headphones.
– Don’t be nice when driving, be predictable. People being nice lead to accidents.
– The world is a cruel place, so be kind to strangers because you never know what people have gone through.
– After you answer someone’s question, follow it up with, “what about you?”
– Be respectful of the personal space of others.
– If a person only has one of something left (gum, a piece of cake, cigarettes, etc.), don’t bother asking him/her for it.
– If someone derives happiness and confidence from something they do it doesn’t hurt them or others (even animals), then let them be.
– Before saying something, ask yourself: Do I need to say this? Do I need to say this now? Does it have to be me who says that? If you answered “yes” to all these questions, then go ahead and say it.
– Two people in your life you should never lie to under any circumstances: your doctor and your lawyer.
– Buy a plunger before you need it.
– Never comment to a woman without makeup that she looks sick or tired.
– If someone didn’t ask you for advice, don’t be surprised if he/she doesn’t take it seriously.
– Get vaccinated.
– Don’t talk about Fight Club.
