Mom Shared 2nd Grader’s Math Homework Online But Nobody Could Help Her Find The Correct Answer

As preschool kids, most of us couldn’t wait to start receiving homework and become cool like our older siblings or friends.

Despite the enormous anticipation, even greater despair soon followed as we were overflown with homework that cut our playtime in half.

Nevertheless, elementary school homework was never very hard, and we had parents there to help us solve whatever we couldn’t.

Recently, however, some people have been suggesting that homework has gotten much harder and sometimes even pointless. For a parent, after all, it can be pretty embarrassing not to be able to help an 8-year-old with homework.

Here’s the question:

There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?

If your answer is 36, you’re wrong, just like most people are when it comes to this problem. Why? Well, if there are 36 small dogs that means there are 13 large dogs, as the total amount of dogs equals 49. But in that case, there would only be 23 more small dogs (36 – 13) than large dogs.

Angie turned to the teacher for a solution. To her surprise, even the teacher didn’t know the answer! She was, however, determined to find the right explanation.

Finally, a few days later, Angie received an answer from the local school district. To view the entire solution, scroll down!

The answer is… There are 42.5 small dogs and 6.5 large dogs! Yes, apparently, in math half a dog is something completely ordinary.

Here’s the breakdown of the solution:

49 = x + y and y = x + 36; whereas X represents large dogs and Y represents small dogs.

After combining the two equations you get this:

49 = x + x + 36

49 = 2x + 36

13 = 2x

x = 6.5

y = 42.5

After seeing the solution, the problem sure does seem simple. But did you get the correct result when you tried to solve it on your own? Let us know in the comments below and don’t forget to share this post to confuse your friends and family!
