Several hundred stolen pets have been rescued in central China recently from an underground abattoir as animal lovers urged the nation to ban the citizens from eating dogs.
The photographs show wounded, frightened and helpless dogs that have been released.
The pets were being driven away from an illegal slaughterhouse in Henan this month. This comes after more than 154,000 people in the world had to lose their lives because of the coronavirus.
The origin of the deadly disease has been linked to the consumption of exotic animal meat in China.
The activists had called on Beijing to ban wild animals, cats, and dogs from dinner plates after the coronavirus pandemic that emerged in China’s Wuhan in December.
A massive total of 423 dogs who are thought to be stolen pets had been saved in the operation, which happened on 3rd April.
The rescuers then transferred 25 of the weakest dogs to Beijing so that they can be cared for by animal shelter, which is jointly operated by Vshine and an animal charity organization HSI (Humane Society International).
The rescue effort happened after the police got a tip-off from activists and netizens willing to help. After that, the police discovered a nightmarish dog slaughterhouse in the process.
An HSI spokesperson said that it was very early to conclude whether the rescue dogs were missing pets who were being searched by their owners but most of the saved dogs had once been someone’s champion.
Various groups took part in this rescue operation, including the partner groups of Vshine in Henan as well as the Zhengzhou Animal Protection Association.
The charities, along with volunteers, worked together to put pressure on the local authorities to confiscate the dogs. Vshine’s staff led negotiations with the law enforcement officers and also participated in the confiscation.
In response to coronavirus, China had banned all consumption and trade of wild animals in February.
Although activists have been trying for years to ban dog meat in the country, it was only last week when the Chinese Ministry announced that dogs are companion animals and should not be treated as livestock.
