While some women become single moms by choice, others are forced by the circumstances to raise their children on their own.
It’s usually believed that kids raised by single moms cannot become as successful as the ones brought up by both parents. But this is not true.
Here are six single moms who raised extraordinary children.
1. Mariah Carey’s mom, Patricia Hickey
Patricia Hickey was an opera singer and the wife of air navigation engineer Alfred Roy Carey. The couple got a divorce while Mariah was only three years of age.
Patricia worked two jobs to make the ends meet. For young Mariah, her mom was what she aspired to become and today, she’s a renowned singer and winner of 5 Grammy awards.
2. Justin Bieber’s mom, Pattie Mallette
Elizabeth Patricia Mallette, aka Pattie Mallette, who is a writer and producer, started a relationship with Jeremy Bieber at the age of 15.
At 18, she gave birth to the famous pop star Justin Bieber. Soon after Justin was born, the couple broke up.
Justin learned to play the keyboard at just seven years of age. In 2007, Pattie posted a video of Justin singing and playing the piano. This video made the little boy a star in the pop music industry.
So far, he has sold more than 100 million records, becoming one of the top Canadian singers to ever be.
3. Selena Gomez’s mom, Amanda Cornett
Amanda Cornett gave birth to Selena Gomez while she was just 16. Selena’s father was a Mexican, Ricardo Joel Gomez. The couple had a divorce while Selena was just five.
Amanda who was a theater actress raised Selena alone and inspired her to become a singer. Selena pursued the field and got fame as a pop singer at an age of just 17.
4. Angelina Jolie’s mom, Marcheline Bertrand
Angelina Jolie, known widely for her role in the Lara Croft movies, is the daughter of Marcheline Bertrand who had ambitions to become a cinema star.
Marcheline was married in 1971 to actor Jon Voight but their marriage lasted only 9 years. The brave and dedicated mom let her acting career go and raised a great actress.
Now, Angelina Jolie is a UNICEF ambassador, an actor, and a mom of six.
5. Halle Berry’s mom, Judith Ann Hawkins
Halle Berry’s mom Judith Ann Hawkins was married to Jerome Jess Berry, who worked in the same hospital as her.
The two got divorced while Halle was just four.
Judith raised Halle and her elder sister Haidi as a single mom. Halle is the first-ever black actress to get an Oscar and she also has other honors like Emmy award and Golden Globe as well.
6. Leonardo DiCaprio’s mom, Irmelin Indenbirken
Leonardo DiCaprio, the Hollywood A-Lister who actively fights for environmental awareness, was the only child of George DiCaprio, a comic book author, and Irmelin Indenbirken, a court clerk.
His parents broke up while he was just one-year-old.
Leo’s mom raised him as a single mother. She had to do a number of jobs to support herself and her son. Leo is now considered to be one of the greatest actors in Hollywood.
