A man has spoken out and sought advice after contemplating divorce over the name his wife chose for their baby son.
According to the man in question, his partner tricked him into naming their name after her late ex-husband. While he admitted he is okay with his wife keeping the memory of her ex alive through framed pictures and the jewelry he gave her, he insisted he doesn’t want his child named after him.
Initially, the wife asked her husband if they could name their firstborn son after her late husband – James. The husband refused and the couple eventually settled on the name Oliver which was also suggested by the wife.
It wasn’t until a family dinner, however, that the man discovered the real meaning behind the name his wife had pushed for.
“I told them (the family) about the name we’ve chosen. Her sister then said ‘oh, so like James?’ and I was confused, so her sister said, ‘well, that was James’ middle name, wasn’t it?” the man wrote.
“After they all left, I told my wife I’ve had it with her trying to push her late husband into our lives like this. She said we already agreed on Oliver. I told her I’m not signing the birth certificate if she names him after her former spouse.”
The man also admitted that he is contemplating divorce even though his wife tried to put the blame on him by calling him “insensitive.”
After asking Reddit for advice, the man was quickly supported by the majority who sided with him and suggested the wife was out of line.
“If you are going to move on and build a life with someone new, then you need to commit to that. If you don’t it’s insanely cruel in many ways to your new partner,” one viewer said.
“I’m not saying she needs to erase the memory of her first husband but naming your kid after him is a little too much.”
“If she isn’t ready to let him go then she shouldn’t be in a relationship or having a kid with someone else,” another added.
