A new mom has shared how her mother-in-law called her a ‘hypocrite’ after she kissed her newborn baby girl.
Posting on Reddit, the woman explained that her daughter with her husband was the first grandchild on both sides of the family.
They were advised by their pediatrician to not let others kiss their daughter for the first 8 to 12 weeks minimum.
The mom said that both of their families were informed and accepted the pediatrician’s advice.
But when they visited her in-law’s home, she had an argument with her mother-in-law after she kissed her own daughter.
She said that she had just finished breastfeeding her 6-week-old baby when she softly kissed her on the bed.
“My mother-in-law noticed and immediately remarked on it in a super passive-aggressive manner: ‘Oh, I’m so glad that we’re able to kiss (baby) now! Did your pediatrician update the rules?’”
“She then accused me of violating the rules by kissing my own baby,” the woman continued.
“I told her that the recommendation was that no one besides myself and my husband kiss our daughter, and she argued and heavily implied that I was being dishonest because I’d previously said ‘nobody can kiss the baby’ rather than ‘nobody but husband and I can kiss the baby,’” before her mother-in-law called her a ‘hypocrite’ and walked out of the room.
Moments later, her mother-in-law came back and apologized.
“She the asked me if I would avoid kissing my baby in front of her until she’s allowed to do so as well, because it’s upsetting to see me doing that and knowing that she can’t,” she added.
Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts on the matter, with one person commenting: “This is absurd. You need to just limit contact until your baby has had her immunizations. Your husband needs to step up here and deal with his relatives.”
Another said: “You don’t have a baby kissing problem, you have a mother-in-law problem.”
A third added: “I mean babies can be very sweet and it’s quite natural to want to kiss them, especially if you’re family. I know when my niece was little I definitely felt the urge to kiss her. I didn’t though because I was aware of the risks.”
