A young blind boy has captured the hearts of thousands of people who have seen him perform his favorite songs.
6-year-old Avett Ray Maness may be blind, but his disability never got the better of him and never stopped him from doing what he loves the most.
The young artist is a self-taught piano player who has been experimenting with the instrument ever since he was only 11 months old.
After Ray’s performances picked interest on YouTube where his mother shared his videos, the Ohio-based singer and piano player has become an internet celebrity.
Avett, who is entirely blind on one eye and nearly blind on the other, was born with retrolental fibroplasia, “abnormal proliferation of fibrous tissue immediately behind the lens of the eye, leading to blindness.”
With little vision left, Avett relies on reading braille and walking with a cane. Lacking sight, however, has not slowed him down when it comes to music, as he manages to find his way among 88 piano keys.
Besides becoming a YouTube star, Avett has also held a concert for several hundred people where he performed his favorite songs. As of recently, his focus is on two bands, The Turtles and Queen.
Speaking of her son’s near-total blindness, Sara Moore, the boy’s mother, said that she hopes to raise awareness not only about her son’s talent but also about the need to encourage the enhancement of resources and accessibility for the visually impaired.
“Music is in his body,” Moore explained in an interview with CBS News. “He’s really practicing on performing now. Since his talent is so amazing, people are asking him to perform.”
