A mother has left people divided after asking whether an 8-year-old girl is old enough to take showers on her own or not.
Asking for advice on Reddit, the woman explained that her stepdaughter is almost 9 and doesn’t bathe herself.
“I remember by that age, I bathed myself,” she expressed, adding that she tried to convince her husband that it was time that she shower herself with a little bit of help.
“At her mum’s house, her mum still bathes her and thinks that is how we should be doing things here in our home. I don’t agree,” the woman went on.
“Am I moving too quickly and should slow down a bit? Is 8-9 too young a age to shower yourself? I remember by that age, I bathed myself.”
Her post received hundreds of comments, with one person saying: “My kids have consistently bathed/showered themselves since they were 5/6, she’s old enough to do it herself.”
Another said: “My eight, almost nine-year-old showers completely independently and sometimes gives my five-year-old bathing assistance.
At seven, I started coaching from outside the shower and now kiddo does a really good job alone.
I’d say the first several times kiddo needed reminders about the order of shampoo and conditioner and some tips on rinsing. ”A third commented: “My four-year-old cleans himself without any issues in the shower. Each kid is unique but that’s a bit odd to be co-showering. The only thing I need to help him with is reaching to turn the shower itself on and off. Eight is more than capable of cleaning themselves.”
