The Full Monty actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away at the age of 75, his grieving family revealed.
The two-time Oscar-nominated star, who was best known for his role as Gerald Arthur Cooper in the 1997 film, died ‘suddenly’ on Saturday.
During his career that spanned almost five decades, he starred in the 2005 blockbuster Batman Begins, 1998 romantic comedy Shakespeare in Love, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2011.
Wilkinson’s death was announced in a statement by his agent on behalf of his family. He is survived by his wife Diana Hardcastle, 74, and their two daughters, Mollie and Alice.
The heartbreaking statement read: “It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him. The family asks for privacy at this time.”
It was in 1988 when Wilkinson and his wife got married. They went on to play husband and wife in the 2011 The Kennedys and starred in the 2014 movie Good People.
They also recently starred in the 2020 series Belgravia.
Wilkinson was nominated for two Oscars for his performance in the 2001 drama In The Bedroom and in the 2007 film Michael Clayton. He was also nominated for six Baftas.
He won a 2008 Emmy and a 2009 Globe for his performance in the HBO series John Adams starring Paul Giamatti.
The actor most recently reunited with his The Full Monty co-stars, Mark Addy and Robert Carlyle, in a Disney+ series.
The star had over 130 film and television credits.
Carlyle, who played Gaz I The Full Monty, wrote: “So sad to hear of the passing of Tom. A wonderful man, he will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of working with him. A brilliant actor, truly one of the greats of not only his but of any generation.. RIP Tom Wilkinson.”
George Clooney told Variety: “Tom made every project better. Made every actor better. He was the epitome of elegance and he will be dearly missed by all of us.”
