The lead singer of the 1960s pop group Shangri-Las has passed away at the age of 75.

Mary Weiss was the head of the beloved 60s American girl group which rose to stardom after a series of songs revolving around teenage romance.

The group’s top hits included the likes of Leader of the Pack, Remember (Walking in the Sand), Give Him a Great Big Kiss, I Can Never Go Home Anymore, Out in the Streets, Right Now and Not Later, Paradise, He Cried, Long Live Our Love, and Past, Present, and Future.

The news of Weiss’ passing was shared by her record label with Miriam Linna of Norton Records branding the late singer as an icon and a heroine.

“Mary was an icon, a hero, a heroine, to both young men and women of my generation and of all generations,” Linna said.

Paying a tribute to the Shangri-Las’ lead singer was also the official account of Ronnie Spector – the co-founder of the girl group who passed away in 2022.

“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Mary Weiss’ passing. She and Ronnie were kindred spirits; two fearless bad girls of the 60s. Join us as we spin the Shangri-Las in her honor,” their Instagram statement read.

Weiss stayed with the group until 1968 when the members parted ways. In 2007, she revealed that the group’s split was caused by legal issues.

“When we started, it was all about music. By the time it ended, it was all about litigation,” she told Rolling Stone.

After her group disbanded, Weiss moved to San Francisco and stayed out of the limelight for decades. She eventually returned to New York to pursue a career in architecture rather than music.

In 2007, the singer finally re-entered the music scene and went on to release her debut solo record Dangerous Game.
