Gender row boxer Imane Khelif just received a hero’s welcome in her hometown in Algeria.
The star athlete came out on top at this year’s Paris Olympics and after returning home, she was all smiles.
Huge crowds waited for her arrival, alongside other athletes of the nation. Imane stood proud with her gold medal around her neck as many chanted best wishes to the star.
The 25-year-old beat China’s Yang Liu to reach this level and win the 66kg event after a unanimous decision.
Alongside Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, she managed to take home the women’s 57kg category. But despite their major accomplishments, many have scrutinized the duo concerning their gender and eligibility in the competition.
Both the fighters spoke about getting disqualified last year at the World Championship after they failed a gender test but instead, they requested to give them a second chance as they were indeed females.
This year, it was a complete turnaround of events for them. Khelif was constantly bombarded with criticism over the Olympic Committee’s decision to have her fight on Friday. But she stands by her claims that she’s a woman like any other in this competition and therefore shouldn’t be bullied.
