A student athlete from Virginia is facing serious assault charges after a viral track meet incident that left a runner with a serious concussion and possible fractured skull.
As per the attorney from Lynchburg Commonwealth, the charge against Alaila Everett during the afternoon hours of Wednesday arose.
The incident arose on March 4th during the state championship race where Brookeville junior Kaelen Tucker received a serious blow to the back of her head while passing Everett in the 4×200 relay race.
The shocking video captured shows Everett seeming to slam her baton against Tucker in the back of her head, and that blow forced her down to the ground.
Judges rushed to disqualify Everett for contact interference but many felt that was not enough and legal authorities and law enforcement agencies needed to intervene.
The season ended for both females as Tucekr suffered a serious concussion and reports about a possible skull fracture arose.
ABC13 previously spoke with both athletes to hear the side of the story. The interview with Everett had her speaking about the matter not being intentional and only an accident. She was amazed at the level of backlash she kept on getting.
She also justified the brutal act with claims that she lost her balance while the other athlete got so close to her while they were coming around the track’s curve.
