YouTube star James Charles has lost over two million subscribers including famed celebrities in just two days after the news of his feud with mentor Tati Westbrook broke out.
The 19-year-old beauty guru saw his entire career falter after Tati – his mentor and fellow makeup artist – lambasted him in a 43-minute-long video message.
Tati criticized James, who is on a tour in Australia, for promoting a competitor to her company. The 37-year-old said it was the final blow in a series of incidents, and that she has ended ‘all association’ with him.
James, who had more than 16.5 million subscribers on YouTube, was left with 13.9 million followers just after a period of two days.
A number of celebrities – including Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Demi Lovato – also unsubscribed James on YouTube after the feud was made public.
A Twitter poll, in which over 60,000 users participated, found that 78 per cent users believe that James’ career has now ended.
It all started when James promoted Sugar Bear Hair vitamins – a direct competitor of Tati’s beauty supplements brand Halo Beauty – on his Instagram Story while attending California-based festival Coachella on April 22.
Shortly after, Tati said she was feeling ‘betrayed’ in a mysterious post.
James knew the ‘betrayal’ pointed at his promotional videos, so he released a statement, saying: ‘I want to publicly apologize to my close friend Tati.’
‘She has been like a mother to me since my first days in this industry and has given me more love, support, resources and advice than I could ever ask for.’
‘This weekend I did an Instagram Story for vitamins that I’ve been taking because the brand helped me with security when the crowd around me at Coachella became unsafe.’
‘I did not accept any money from this post.’
The feud became bitter when Gabriel Zamora and other beauty bloggers jumped to James’ defense, saying Tati had no right to be angry with him.
This led Tati to release her ‘Bye Sister’ video message on May 10 on her Instagram, @GlamLifeGuru.
‘I have finally had enough,’ Tati said to her 5.8 million followers in the lengthy message.
‘Get off your high horse and have some respect. You don’t have any for the people who are in this industry and that’s the sad fact.’
‘I have not asked him for a penny, I have never been on his Instagram,’ she added, before listing other issues the 37-year-old had with James.
‘He said some things, telling me about a situation that happened in Seattle at my birthday, and it literally made me want to vomit,’ she continued.
Questing his motives behind a series of recent incidents, Tati said: ‘You are using your fame, your power, your money to play with people’s emotions.’
After the feud, Tati’s subscriber count totaled to 8.7 million with an addition of 2.9 million new followers.
Supporting Tati’s narrative, one of her fans commented on the video: ‘Tati makes whole James Charles career. In 2019: UNO Reverse Card.’
Another user wrote: ‘And this, children, is how you become an influencer, expose leeches and remain classy while doing so.’
‘James referred to Tati as a mother. Well Happy Mother’s Day James,’ one person said.
Yet another added: ‘My jaw literally dropped when I saw the title of this video.’
Makeup artist Jeffree Star also showed support for Tati in a tweet.
‘There is a reason that Nathan banned Charles from ever coming over to our home again,’ he wrote. ‘There’s a reason why I haven’t seen him since Tati’s birthday in February.’
James quickly responded to Tati’s video with an eight-minute long message, apologizing for his actions.
Referring to Tati and her husband, James said: ‘I hate knowing that I disappointed not only my fans, but two people that have been role models for me doing this.’
‘What sucks the most is that I know there’s nothing I can say or do to ever earn that friendship or trust back but I don’t blame them for it.’
‘A lot of the time when I’ve had to address things in the past, I’ve acted out of impulse and I’ve gone off and tried to pull receipts or facts or screenshots and play the victim and I’m not doing that today, I’m not.’
‘That is all I have to say, I’m sorry.’
