A holidaymaker from the UK was in for a major surprise after he booked a $130-a-night room only for it to turn out to be a shipping container sitting at the side of a road.
Ben Speller, who is a fan of football, visited the Netherlands’ capital ahead of the match between local Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur.
Traveling purely with the intention of seeing the match, Ben didn’t think much of the type of room he wanted to spend the night in which is why he opted for the first “clean home in Amsterdam with a private bathroom” he came across.
As it turned out, however, the $130-a-night ‘room’ was actually a shipping container placed at the side of a road. In the container, there were three mattresses complemented with a portable poor excuse of a toilet.
“We had already driven past the container three times in the taxi trying to find the place. We thought, ‘This can’t be it,’” the British holidaymaker said in an interview with AT5.
“But when we got out it turned out that it was true. We opened the door and looked inside, locked the door and left. Then we went to a hotel.”
According to Ben, he asked the container owner for a refund but his request got denied. Fortunately, the Airbnb staff refunded the man and treated him the hotel booking after learning of the incident.
Furthermore, Dutch media reported that the owner had no permit for the container and that it got towed away.
“We have removed the host and listings from our platform,” Airbnb spokesperson said.
“Misrepresented or fraudulent listings have no place on our platform, and our team works hard to constantly strengthen our defenses and stay ahead of bad actors.”
