A student accused her professor of sexual harassment as she didn’t get an A in his class.
Summer Naqvi, a student at the University of Illinois, took an economics class with a professor around 30 years her senior.
9 months after the class ended, Naqvi and the male professor connected on social media and started sharing “communications of social nature,” including pictures on Snapchat, said the professor’s attorney.
Naqvi met with the male professor, whom said that when he met with his former economics student (whom he said he didn’t know was his former student as he teaches 1,000 students each semester), “it became clear to me that this individual was focused on convincing me to change her grade from the prior year, or to provide assurance that, if she retook my class, I would give her an A. I said I was not willing to do either of these things.”
The professor said communication with his former student immediately stopped after that. But Naqvi made an anonymous accusation against him on Reddit.
She also made accusations against him on her Facebook page. She wrote: “[The professor] relentlessly sent messages and pictures to me attempting to solicit pictures back, sex in exchange for an A+ in his class, and even attempted to pay me to have sex with him.
“Even though I came forward to campus police with evidence including unwanted text messages and pictures in the fall of 2018, the University did not put him on administrative leave until months later. I am disappointed that they would continue to let him teach during these months because other girls may have fallen victim to sexual harassment from him.”
The professor agreed to resign in exchange for the university dropping the investigation. It is reported that UIUC is still investigating the student’s claims and the economics professor is on leave.
But last week, Naqvi and her friend William Farrell were arrested after holding her ex-boyfriend at knifepoint to delete information from his computer and phone. Her ex may have evidence that undermines her claims against the professor.
She and her friend were charged with “felony counts of aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful restraint of another person.”
Naqvi did not plead guilty to her charges and was released on bond.
