A schoolgirl was sent to the principal’s office after she asked her classmates to stop doing the Nazi salute, the girl’s father said.
Keith Gamble wrote a series of tweets saying his daughter’s classmates kept on making the gesture after a teacher instructed one of the students to play Adolf Hitler for their history project.
“Each time, my daughter spoke out even though she was told by a teacher ‘not to address it,’” Gamble wrote on Twitter.
The 11-year-old girl was removed from class after she told a group of students who did the Nazi salute: “Stop it, put your hands down now!”
A spokesperson for Rutherford County Schools, James Evan, told BuzzFeed News that the project was a part of a WWII exhibit of Living History performed by grade five students at McFadden School of Excellence.
The project involved a student who was playing as Hitler to give a speech and perform the Nazi salute at the end.
Evans said in the statement: “During rehearsal on Thursday, May 9, the student gave his presentation, and when he gave his salute, some other students in the class responded with the same salute. When this occurred, one student became upset and had an outburst.”
He also said that the teacher tried to calm the girl down “but was unable to do so.” The teacher then took the girl out of the room “to give her some time to calm down but to no avail.”
The teacher then took her to the principal “to talk about what had happened” and also called the student’s mother.
“The student was not disciplined or punished in any way for her concerns or actions,” he added. “In fact, the school agrees the actions of the students were completely inappropriate.”
During the awards ceremony to acknowledge the performances of the students, the girl’s mother saw four boys give Nazi salutes when the student who portrayed Hitler got an award. However, no teacher intervened.
