A polar bear was spotted strolling into an industrial city in Russia among traffic. The lost bear walked almost 1,000 miles in the wrong direction.
The lost animal was starving and the pictures of the bear wandering the streets of the world’s northernmost city have been shared by many social media users.
The bear was searching for food among the rubble and walking directly in front of moving traffic in busy city roads. According to locals, it has been the first time a wild polar bear has been spotted in the city since the 1970’s.
After being spotted, the bear was taken under observation by officials.
Environmental services official, Alexander Korobkin, said: ‘’He is still moving around a factory, under observation by police and the emergency services, who are ensuring his safety and those of residents.’’
Irina Yarinskaya, a photographer of Zapolyarnaya Pravda newspaper told local media: ‘’He is seriously hunger-bitten, he is hardly able to blink and keep his eyes open, almost unable to walk.’’
‘’He was lying for a long time, having a rest, then he crossed the road and entered the industrial zone.’’
‘’He went towards the gravel and sand factory. Then he crossed one more road and headed to a dump.’’
A team of specialists reached the scene on Wednesday and they will take further action regarding the bear.
Local campaigners are urging that bear should be returned to its natural habitat.
Oleg Krashevsky who specialises in tours to the remote Putorana Plateau said: ‘’I don’t understand how the bear could have walked such distance, across Taymyr and not come across anyone.’’
‘’He must have encountered many hunters. The same thing happened in 1970’s when a polar bear showed up at an explosives warehouse around the same place as this time.’’
