29-year-old Elliot Dougherty and 32-year-old Matthew Eledge had always wanted to have children.

They started making plans for their family after tying the knot in 2015.

As a same-sex couple, the two knew they would face many challenges before they could achieve their dream of becoming parents.

Their loved ones were eager to help and they were to the moon when Lea, Doughtery’s sister, donated her eggs in 2017.

After that, Eledge’s mother offered to carry their baby.

61-year-old Cecile Eledge told People: “When they first told us they were interested in starting a family it was just a natural instinct that I blurted out. I said, ‘If you’re looking for a carrier, I would do it in a heartbeat.’” She also recalled how much she ‘loved being pregnant’ with her three children.

“I just jumped right in with both feet and was ready to help them in any way that I could. We do kind of joke because I did tell everybody there was a small part of me, when I did mention I would do it, I thought, ‘There’s really no way I could do this! I’m too old!’” she added.

In Cecile’s case, age was just a number! According to Dr. Carolyn Maud Doherty, there are only a very few 61-year-olds who can carry someone else’s babies. Cecile, an avid runner and cyclist, was in a better shape than other 20-year-olds.

“She has the body of a 40-year-old and is actually in better shape than some 20-year-olds,” said Dr. Doherty. “I’m pretty conservative about these sorts of things, but Cecile really turned out to be their best option. She’s genetically blessed.”

The family was a bit hesitant at first but they decided to move forward with the plan. With Matthew’s sperm and one of Leah’s eggs, the 61-year-old became pregnant in their first try at IVF.

Fortunately, there were no complications during pregnancy. Cecile went into labor at Omaha’s University of Nebraska Medical Center for 18 hours and gave birth to her healthy granddaughter, Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge.

“She’s my granddaughter, not my daughter,” Cecile expressed. “The most beautiful thing is that when she’s fussy, I can just hand her off to her parents. I didn’t do this for shock factor or to offend anybody. I did what was best for our family. I did it out of love.”
