Dogs are indeed the best and most loyal friends a man can ever have.
According to a famous quote, “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.” And that sounds 101% true.
Dogs love their owners unconditionally and could even end up giving their lives while protecting them. As a result, according to research done by an American University, around 30% of the pet owners have started to love their dogs more than human beings :)
Even though its alarming, still there is no doubt that dogs can change people lives and can turn a prisoner into a law-abiding citizen.
In the US the Canine Cell Mates Foundation is running a program with Fulton County Jail in Atlanta where the shelter dogs are brought to the prison and the prisoners have to take care of them and train them.
The program that first started with mere an experiment has now shown tremendous and fantastic results.
According to the officials of the Fulton County Jail, each inmate has to take care of his dog for at least 2 months. They told that even though it’s just a short time but the impact of this on the prisoners’ lives is huge.
The staff reported that this program has induced certain responsibilities in the inmates lives e.g responsibility to take care of living being, the responsibility to do your best to achieve a goal, building confidence in working toward a positive outcome and eventually turning them to a law-abiding citizen.
The jail staff also reported that since this program has launched, there has been a major drop, almost 50% in the jail violence incidents. Recidivism instances are also seemed to have decreased sharply.
