Reports have revealed that the six cops who shot an aspiring rapper sleeping in his vehicle fired more than 55 bullets in less than four seconds.
The disturbing count was made public after local media outlets requested for analysis of the fatal police shooting of Willie McCoy, 20.
It was on February 9 when police were called to a Vallejo Taco Bell after McCoy fell asleep in the drive-thru lane. The rapper had a gun on his lap.
Cops claim that he woke up and made a sudden movement before they quickly fired at him.
According to the 51-page report compiled by David Blake, it took the officers only 3.5 seconds to fire the rounds at the aspiring rapper, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car.
The 20-year-old passed away after getting hit by over 20 bullets.
The full report came on the day McCoy’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. John Burris, a civil rights attorney, filed the suit against Vallejo’s city manager, chief of police and the six cops.
McCoy’s family alleges the officers violated McCoy’s constitutional rights by firing at him multiple times. They also claim the police department has a history of officer misconduct.
The lawsuit also stated that the Vallejo police department’s “unconstitutional policing has become so dire and widespread that the City’s residents live in terror of the police department.”
But last month, Blake’s report found that even though cops shot 55 rounds in less than four seconds, the shooting “was reasonable and in line with contemporary training and police practices.”
One person said: “The number of bullets is irrelevant. Passing out in a drive through with a gun in your lap, then waking up and grabbing the gun because cops are yelling at you, is relevant!”
Another wrote: “How can it be reasonable to kill a person who is asleep? That makes no sense? He could have had a heart attack or medical emergency that incapacitated him. This is shocking!”
A third said: “55 shot on one living being. Even dogs don’t deserve to be killed this way.”
