A video that shows an Australian man confronting a kangaroo and then punching it in the face after it attacked a dog has left the Internet divided.
A group of men went for hunting at Dubbo Western Plains Zoo where a kangaroo tried to attack a dog. Zookeeper named Greg Tonkins tried to save the dog and punched the kangaroo in the face.
The shocking video was shared online and left the Internet divided. Internet users criticized the zookeeper while there were some who defended him.
The hunting trip was organized for a young man named Kailem who had rare bone cancer and wanted to catch a boar.
Later, a statement was released that read: “A group of hunters gathered to help a young man with terminal cancer achieve his last wish of catching a wild boar with his hunting dogs.
While hunting, one of the highly trained dogs was chasing pigs by scent and collided with a big buck kangaroo. The kangaroo held and wrestled the dog by its protective gear (boars have tusks like knives). The owner was horrified that his dog or the kangaroo would get hurt and ran in to save both parties.”
“The man backed off to give the kangaroo some space, but because the kangaroo kept coming closer, the man punches the kangaroo’s snout. The kangaroo hopped away and we laughed at the absurdity of the situation and how unfortunate it was for the dog and kangaroo.”
“The dog’s owner felt no malice to the kangaroo but had to step in and fix a bad situation before it got worse. Unfortunately, the young man, Kailem, lost his brave battle with cancer two days ago, so this hunt is part of his family and friends’ treasured memories.”
However, people said that the zoo should fire the zookeeper. But, the zoo said in a statement: “Whilst Taronga does not condone the striking of animals under any circumstances, we would like to thank everyone for their support of Mr. Tonkins and confirm that there is no intention that he will lose his job over this matter.”
“Mr. Tonkins is a passionate Zoo Keeper and has been a valued member of Taronga’s team for over six years and we continue to counsel him as this event and the subsequent media attention unfolds.”
