Have you ever wondered why a manhole is called a manhole? Are only men allowed to enter that hole or only the male I the society has the privilege to fall down in them? What is the reason behind it?
The reason behind it was that when the language was formed, the world was a typical male chauvinistic society where males had all the rights and women had none.
In their perspective, everything that was supposed to happen was in consideration of men and not women thus we have the results in our language as well today.
Now the times have changed and so should these terms. Berkeley, California is acting up just in the right way as they have taken up the decision of changing the gender-oriented terms to be more generic.
For eg., Manholes will be now called Maintenance holes.
Well this is not the only term that has been changed in the municipal code but there are many others like there will be no usage of “brothers and sisters” but the new word in use will be “siblings.”
Instead of “Manpower” the terms to be used are “workforce or human efforts.” Instead of “salesman” the term sales “salesperson” will be used. The codes of the city will no more use the term “manmade” rather it will be stated as “Human-made” or “artificial.”
So what is the basic reason behind the same? The city is apparently willing to make it more inclusive for all the genders and not just keeping it saved for the men of society.
Yes beforehand they did not have the consideration of other genders like women or transgender of any person form the LGBTQ society but the world is a different place now and each gender should stay under the same life of consideration.
