Living in close proximity to other people can generate its share of misunderstandings. Resolving such issues can involve something as simple as a short conversation and a handshake to off-the-chart behavior such as aiming a Civil War cannon at one’s neighbors or taking a fireworks drone and shooting rockets at those pesky neighbors.
And then there are the pranksters who like nothing more than tormenting their long-suffering pals (who also happen to be their neighbors, unlucky them). But your typical pranks were just too mundane for one man who decided to up the ante by luring 300 crows so that they could poo on his grouchy neighbor’s lawn.
Stuart Panter, 37, is friends with and a neighbor of Dez Mansell. The thing about Dez is that Stuart likens him to Victor Meldrew, a character from the TV sitcom One Foot in the Grave that’s played by actor Richard Wilson, who holds the title of being the grumpiest man on TV.
Stuart is no stranger to pranking Dez and even went so far as to plaster the 51-year-old’s house with a big Birmingham City sign. But his long list of pranks pales in comparison to this latest one.
What Stuart did was to install a device on the shed to project a crow’s distress call. That caused hundreds of the birds to respond and swoop in.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper prank without a video, so Dez’s furious reaction was recorded in all its grouchy glory and got more than 77,000 views when it got uploaded.
Stuart said: “Dez is like Victor Meldrew. He’s a very angry man and I just like winding him up.”
Dez can be seen in the clip taking notice of the crows gathering on his lawn.
Suspecting that something was up, he then shouts over the garden fence: “Stuart you’re a pr**k.”
Stuart innocently quips from one of the top floor windows of his house: “What’s up, Dez?”
Dez replies: “You’re a f***ing a**hole,” as the family erupts into laughter.
But despite what the video shows, Stuart says that he and Dez are friends.
Stuart said: “Dez has a little soft spot for me so he lets me wind him up and his reaction is always genuine. We are friends as well.
“I was in the garden and I was bored and wanted something to do. I thought about it and I literally thought about and implemented it in about five minutes. Nothing had been pre-planned.
“Anything that happens is as it happens and genuinely the reaction.
“Realistically it’s just a speaker that makes a crow sound. I think it bought in about 200 or 300 crows.”
Dez is all game, though, and doesn’t mind being referred to as Victor Meldrew. But he admits he wants to eventually get back at Stuart, perhaps by putting up a fake house for sale sign in the future.
Dez, who is originally from Birmingham, said: “Instantly I knew who it was because he does it all the time. He always gets me on stuff.
“He’s a good lad but he is going to get it back.”
