A mother who dumped her 4-year-old son’s body confessed that she put him in a bath so hot he suffered severe burns and his skin floated in the water around him.
FBI and authorities had been searching for the child after he was reported missing from his grandmother’s home in Baltimore.
However, 4-year-old Malachi’s mother, 25-year-old Alicia Lawson, admitted that her son was dead. She and her partner, 40-year-old Shatika Lawson, have been charged in connection to the child’s death.
Malachi’s body was discovered in a metal trash bin. It was evident that he suffered severe injuries and untreated burns.
Charging documents revealed Alicia and Shakita told police that the boy was burned by hot bath so hot his skin started to float around him. Feared of getting punishment, they said they tried to treat the burns.
Alicia then found her unresponsive son nine days later in a ‘puddle of wetness.’ She allegedly wrapped the boy in a blanket and humped him ten miles away.
Both Alicia and Shakita face charges including child abuse, involuntary manslaughter, and false statements. They could face further charges once a medical examination has been finished, said police commissioner Michael Harrison.
The boy had likely been dead since August 1, said police. The authorities grew suspicious after discovering that Alicia had searched for trash collection sites on the web.
“Last night after extensive interviews with Malachi’s mother, Alicia Lawson, she confessed that her son was not missing, but deceased,” Commissioner Harrison said.
FBI, Maryland state police, and Baltimore police all assisted the search for Malachi when he was reported missing. The body was transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
