Over the years, the cruise ships of Venice have received criticizing from the locales as it has been heavily damaging the foundations of the city and spoil its skyline.
Over this issue, the residents of the city have been fighting a battle with the government for years. Now, after almost a decade, the residents have finally managed to ban cruise ships from docking in Venice.
On 7th August, the Italian government announced that they would be re-routing cruisers away from the city centre, which draws over 30 million tourists every year from around the world.
The decision was made following the collision of a cruise ship with a tourist boat in one of the canals of Venice. The incident took place in the month of June.
The collision happened on Giudecca Canal’s quayside when a cruise ship, MSC Opera crashed into a tourist boat leaving five passengers heavily injured. In the same month, another cruise ship narrowly escaped a crash with a canal-side restaurant.
The back-to-back incidents left the locales agitated over the fact that why cruise ships were allowed in the same spot where there are hundreds of other small tourist boats plying.
As per the locales, the city witnessed a drop of over 30,000 visitors during its peak season.
As per the Italian minister, Danilo Toninelli, the cruise ships have been re-routed from its current routes. The minister also stated that the cabinet is looking forward to moving the third to berth at ports away from the mainland of the city.
In the future, the docks will be lined in a new location which would be outside the lagoon which would be decided by the public lagoon.
Back in June, the primary conservation group of Italy stated that Venice should be listed ion the United Nation’s list of endangered cities as they will believe it will help the city to preserve its historical significance in the world.
In 2018, the city took several steps to ban boorish behaviour such as banning visitors from sitting on the ground and fining anyone carrying liquor after 7 pm.
