20-year-old Mert Ney has been arrested after he allegedly killed a 21-year-old woman inside her apartment and stabbed another at a nearby bar.
The blood-soaked knifeman was screaming ‘Allahu Akbar’ when he went on a rampage. He was subdued by bystanders using a milk crate and chairs after he tried to stab more people.
Authorities are investigating whether Ney had escaped from a mental hospital. They think the incident is not terror-related as the man had no connections to any terrorist organizations.
But NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said they found information on him including a USB stick ‘suggesting he had some ideologies related to terrorism.’ It also referenced mass shootings in the USA and New Zealand.
Commissioner Fuller said Ney had been known to police even though his history didn’t compare to his alleged actions in Sydney.
He was first arrested when he was caught with knuckledusters. Police were called to his home in Marayong after reports of ‘concern for welfare.’ In June, he had a charge dismissed by a magistrate.
Ney was sentenced to a 9 months conditional release order as long as he did not commit another offense. The conditions also mentioned that he was to seek help for his mental issues.
Just last week, he went to the emergency room as he suffered from a drug overdose.
Ney is believed to have acted at random and is expected to be charged. Medication, identified as a drug used for anti-anxiety, was found close to Ney.
The 21-year-old woman’s body was found in her unit on Clarence Street. It is believed she was a sex worker and the attacker knew her.
A spokesperson for the city’s St. Vincent Hospital said the injured woman, 41, was in a stable condition.
Hero witnesses managed to stop him and pinned his head down with a milk crate until cops arrived.
