President Donald Trump has donated his 2nd-quarter 2019 salary back to the country, according to the White House.
The money he gave will mostly to be used for funding an upcoming health advisory addressing the opioid epidemic.
Trump had promised to donate all of his salaries when he became the president. He is already making his third salary donation to the Department of Health and Human Services.
The White House said in a statement: “The President recognizes the important mission of the Surgeon General to protect and improve the health of all Americans, including helping to tackle the opioid epidemic and raise awareness of the dangers of e-cigarette usage among teenagers and children.”
Nin 2016, Trump had vowed that he would not take his $400,000 annual Presidential salary if he came into power. But because the law states that the President must receive salary, he has been donating the money to various departments over his term.
“I donate 100% of my President’s salary, $400,000, back to our Country, and feel very good about it!” he wrote on Twitter.
The Department of Education, the National Park Service, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation and Department of Veterans are some of the departments that he has donated to over his term.
In March, Trump donated his last quarter’s salary to the Department of Homeland Security.
Since federal regulations state that departments cannot accept donations without authorization from Congress, Trump’s money were deposited into the Treasury Department’s general fund.
Parts of Trump’s salary will go towards combating opioid addiction, a camp promoting math, engineering, science and technology careers, and restoration projects.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human services, said: “His decision to donate his salary is a tribute to his compassion, to his patriotism, and to his sense of duty to the American people. He has a sincere interest in public health issues to which HHS is going to devote his donation.”
