A 43-year-old woman has finally had her leg amputated after suffering years of pain.
Gill Haddington, from Morecambe, Lancs, accidentally dropped a bottle of perfume that landed on her foot while getting ready in 2015.
She couldn’t put her foot back down again and initially thought she must have broken it.
The mother-of-two rushed to the hospital but even X-rays and scans didn’t show any signs of break or injury.
She said: “When I first did it I cried out in pain, I lifted my foot to look at it and it hurt so much I couldn’t put it back down again. Initially, I thought I must have broken it – I wish I had.”
However, her condition got worse as her right foot swelled to twice its normal size and the toes curled.
She said: “All the while I was becoming a prisoner in my own home,” said Gill. I was in constant excruciating pain. I could not walk at all.”
“I don’t think I slept at all at that time. It hurt too much to be laid up in bed. Instead, I would sleep on the sofa with my foot propped on a box to keep it in position, any movement I made in the night would wake me.”
In 2016, she was diagnosed with chronic regional pain syndrome and started thinking about having her leg removed.
She said: “My leg was already dead to me, it was the cause of so much pain and unhappiness and I just wanted to get on with my life. I wanted to be able to walk again and to go swimming. I love open-air swimming.”
She then begged surgeons to remove her leg and finally, surgeons at Royal Preston Hospital, Lancs removed her leg in 2017.
After suffering years of pain, she finally has had her leg amputated and now uses a prosthetic leg.
She is now happy and able to swim again. She said: “I hadn’t walked for almost three years. The prosthetic isn’t perfect but I love it so much, having my leg removed was the best thing I ever did. I don’t regret it at all.”
