President Donald Trump claimed that he has never heard of a Category 5 hurricane even though hurricane Dorian is the fourth such storm that threatened the US during his presidency.
At the FEMA briefing in Washington, Trump said that he didn’t know that he has ever seen or even heard of that term until only recently.
He continued by saying he always knew it existed and he has seen some Category 4s hurricanes but never heard of Category 5.
The US president has made several claims similar to this before, and social media was quick to pinpoint that he has experienced more frequent Category 5 hurricanes compared to any other predecessors.
There were two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017, Hurricane Irma that resulted in serious landfalls in Florida and Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico.
Then there was Hurricane Michael last year, which was the third hurricane in Trump’s presidency hitting the land in Florida.
Hurricane Dorian resulted in massive landfall in the Bahamas and expected to move towards Florida.
However, the US seaboard may manage to avoid a direct hit. President Trump made some similar claims in September 2017 at the time of Hurricane Irma.
He said that in Florida, you got hit with the record-breaking hit. It actually hit the keys with Category 5. I never knew this category actually existed. A month later he again claimed that nobody has ever heard of Category five hitting the land.
In the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency, he has experienced only one Category 5 hurricane. Hurricane Matthew, which caused enormous devastation in Haiti and also made landfall in South California.
Trump has also incorrectly claimed that the State of Alabama could be hit from Hurricane Dorian. He said that it looks like Georgia is going to be hit and Alabama is going to be hit with it as well.
