Situated at the boundary of the world’s largest tectonic plates, New Zealand has always been prone to minor earthquakes every now and then.
Things went out of the hands when New Zealand was struck by a major earthquake of 5.2 magnitude even before overcoming the aftershock of a 4.5 magnitude.
According to the reports, locals have said that they have felt tremors after 7 pm local time on Wednesday that left them terror struck.
The second earthquake was felt after few minutes at a depth of five kilometers centered on the northeast of Turangi beside Lake Tuapo.
Reports have claimed that the waves were felt to the extent of Wellington and more than 500 felt reports have been registered on GeoNEt website.
They were witnessed across the North Island that included Hamilton, Hastings, Murupara, Cambridge, Dannevirke, and Fielding.
Moments after the incident, a spokesperson from GeoNEt connected to the residents and gave a statement that the incident has no connection with volcanic activity.
Additionally, GeoNet gave a heads up regarding more aftershocks through the night and asked the residents to stay alert and safe.
According to the GeoNet data, a total of 180 earthquakes have been recorded in the area within last week that has been recorded that has left the residents of the area in utter shock and terror.
The Volcano Duty Officer, Steven Sherburn has added his comment about the incident that such incidents are quite common in the region as the area lies above the boundary of the destructing tectonic plates.
He further added that larger earthquakes have even lasted weeks to months, and this incident is nothing compared to that.

People have shared their thought via their social media posts by saying that Taupo is not a destructive volcano that can how such terrorizing behavior, it cannot simply erupt without a prior signal.
