The 17-year-old girl Charlotte Guy committed suicide after she accidentally confessed to her boyfriend about cheating on him through a Snapchat message.
Charlotte’s parents have said that she had been diagnosed by a doctor in the past due to her willingness to hurt herself.
Charlotte is from Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. At first, she wanted to send the message about her cheating to her friend, but she accidentally sent it to her boyfriend instead.
The couple had been going through a tough relationship and had ended their relationship 3 days prior to Charlotte’s death.
Her 20-year-old boyfriend, Jack Hurst, revealed during Charlotte’s inquest that he and Charlotte had been in an on-and-off relationship for the past 2 years. According to The Mirror, he stated during the inquest, ‘she had made comments to me before about feeling that the world wasn’t meant for her.’
Jack further revealed that he went to visit Charlotte in Wigan on 21st of September, it was at this time she ended their relationship.
In his statement, Jack said: ‘she said that she felt like she couldn’t trust me but wanted to stay friends. I said that it wasn’t what I wanted, but I went back to my parents in Blackpool.’ He continued: ‘she asked if I was okay and I said that I felt we could continue our relationship. Charlotte went out with friends that night and I didn’t hear much from her.’
The following day Jack received a text from her saying that she had kissed someone else the night before, after the message she went out again that day.
But it was on Sunday, 24th of September, Charlotte accidentally sent the Snapchat message to Jack, who was studying at Newcastle at the time.
‘The Snapchat referenced her sleeping with someone on a Saturday night. She told me that it wasn’t for me, and apologized and said she was a horrible person. She said that she wanted to talk and explain, but I said that I didn’t feel like talking and to message me to say what she wanted to say.’ Jack said about the message.
The next message he received from Charlotte got him worried as it was ‘goodbye.’ He then admitted that he tried to call her back but then got another message at 17:13 saying ‘it doesn’t matter. Goodbye. Please forgive me.’
Jack immediately contacted the police after receiving this message. Using her Snapchat, the police were able to get her exact location. Unfortunately, when they found her she was already dead hanging from a tree that was near her college.
The last message that Jack got from Charlotte was: ‘I love you, knowing that you hate me is enough.’
The coroner, Alan Walsh, said that Charlotte was a ‘troubled young lady’ and the toxicology reports showed that Charlotte was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol.
Alan said, “Charlotte was 17 years of age when she died. She was at college, and her trigger points were the work-related stress of both college and work and domestic life with her boyfriend. That may well have been a factor to affect her state of mind.”
