10 women, aged 47 to 81, from just one family are celebrating after they managed to beat breast cancer.
The survivor includes mothers, aunties, daughters, and two sisters-in-law.
Their cancer battle began when 78-year-old Joyce Waite was diagnosed in 2002. The long battle ended when her nephew’s partner, 54-year-old Jane Reeson, beat the disease in 2017.
55-year-old Vanessa Haw, who has four children and 8 great-grandchildren, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. All her lymph nodes were removed from her left arm and she had a left-sided mastectomy plus two more surgeries to remove damaged skin.
Vanessa, who also underwent a right mastectomy as a precaution, has led many fundraising events and even set up a Facebook page to share the experiences of her family.
“We’ve all fought cancer together as a family and shared our experiences with each other which has really helped,” she said.
“We’re a close family so we’ve been there for each other.
“That support and knowing someone had breast cancer but survived has been brilliant. Even on the worst days, you knew there was life, there was hope.”
It was not clear if the blood-related women had undergone genetic testing for the BRCA1 and 2 genes after their diagnoses, nor if all eight of them had been diagnosed with the same type of breast cancer.
To celebrate being disease-free, the ten women posed for photos for a charity calendar.
