The choir realized they wouldn’t be able to watch the Wales v Ireland match as they would be in the air so they decided to sing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers).
Osian Rowlands, the choir’s conductor, said they were heading back to London after performing at the Etihad Palace Opera House in Abu Dhabi.
The choir realized they would miss the Wales v Ireland match and decided to sing the national anthem.
Mr. Rowlands told WalesOnline: “Knowing we were going to be missing the match I asked the airline if we could sing the anthem before take-off.”
“I was told it was down to the captain, so when we arrived on the plane, the captain who it turned out was Irish came to talk to us and told us he couldn’t say no to our request and to go for it.”
“He even announced to the rest of the passengers that we would be singing the anthem.”
The plane was delayed by an hour so they had the time to record the video and post it online. The video instantly went viral and received thousands of likes and shares.
Wales won the match 25-7. Mr. Rowlands said they celebrated the win. He said: “We celebrated with few drinks when Wales clinched the Grand Slam when we were somewhere over Turkey.”
He said he was left surprised after knowing how popular the video became after it was posted online. He wasn’t expecting it to become so popular.
He said: “I couldn’t believe how many people have seen it. We’ve had some brilliant comments. It’s been the perfect end to a wonderful trip to the Middle East.”
