The Chinese authorities have raided the home of a high-profile official and discovered over 13 tons of gold bars worth over $600 million in his house during the raid.
As the authorities reported, 58-year-old Zhang Qi, an influential Communist official, was also hiding 268 billion yuan ($37 billion) of bribe money in his bank account.
In addition to the vast assets discovered in the man’s home and on his bank account, the official has also received several luxury villas as bribes.
If the results of the investigation prove all of the things said above, it would mean that Mr. Zhang was actually richer than the wealthiest person in China, Jack Ma, whose worth was estimated at $37 billion by Forbes.
Before getting sacked, Zhang served as the Party Committee of Haikou secretary and the Standing Committee of Hainan Province. His power was equal to that of the mayor of Haikou, as he helped rule over 9 million people belonging to the Hainan province.
Before rising to power in the province’s capital, Zhang served as the mayor of Danzhou and deputy mayor of Sanya city.
Following the crackdown, the 58-year-old was immediately stripped of both titles.
The footage showing inspectors allegedly collecting and counting bars of gold in Zhang’s home has also leaked and went viral on the internet.
Despite the news of the high-profile corruption going global, the Chinese government has censored everything concerning the topic within the country.
According to the corruption watchdog’s statement from September 6, Zhang has started getting investigated after they suspected him of violating discipline and the law.
The investigation continues.
