A head physician and an obstetrician could be jailed for up to 20 years after a stillborn baby boy who suddenly started moving was put in morgue fridge “because paperwork already classed him as dead.
”
Doctor Kuanysh Nysanbaev knew that the baby’s leg had moved, which is a sign of life, but he still ordered that the child should be put in the fridge.
Nysanbaev and the unnamed obstetrician at Atyrau regional perinatal center in Kazakhstan face murder charges and could be imprisoned for up to 20 years.
According to reports, the suspected ‘medical infanticide’ came to light as detectives had bugged the doctor’s phone as part of an unconnected bribery investigation.
“After birth, the baby was negligently registered as stillborn, while in fact he was still alive,” said police chief Shynys Kabdula.
“After the child gave signs of life, the doctors, instead of taking urgent measures, decided to act according to paperwork already issued saying the child was stillborn.”
The two doctors “left the newborn to die. The baby was placed in a (morgue) refrigerator… He talked about the baby on the phone… The baby died in the refrigerator.”
It is claimed that the two doctors simply didn’t want to correct the hospital’s computer database, which showed the baby was dead.
“Such a charge against doctors terrifies me,” said Regional health chief Manshuk Aimurzieva.
Deputy health minister Lyazzat Aktayeva also said: “I apologize to the family, to the mother of the child.”
Nysanbaev is also accused of bribing officials to cover up medical mistakes. The two have been detained pending an investigation.
